Are you getting ready to tackle a large painting project and don’t know where to start with what you need? Luckily, we have the best painting tools for you so that you can stop searching for the “next best thing” and just jump in and get started on your project.
There are so many amazing painting products out there; however, it can be really overwhelming trying to figure out which one is going to work for you and your project. We have tested a ton of different products out there so that you don’t have to. From those tested products, we have compiled a list of the items that we feel everyone needs in their collection.
When my sister and I painted our entire vacation rental from brown to white we knew we had to find the best painting tools that were going to allow us to save time, and ultimately, to be able to tackle the project without completely losing our minds. And we have done just that.
This post will provide you with a list of nine of the best painting tools that you are absolutely going to want to have on hand. Whether you are tackling a furniture flip or painting the interior or exterior of your home, these tools will be extremely useful in helping you get to the finish line of your project.
This post is all about the best painting tools.
The Best Painting Tools
1. Edger
This first product may be one of the best painting tools known to mankind (or womankind if you will). This little guy comes in handy when painting walls as it makes navigating around the trim, windows, doors, etc. so seamless.
A tip to using this tool is to not oversaturate it with paint. If you get too much paint on the edger, the paint can “spill” over the edge… defeating the whole purpose of using the edger and getting those perfect clean lines. Once you get the hang of using this for cutting in on edges, you will never go back.
2. High Quality Roller
Having a paint roller as part of this list probably comes as no surprise. However, a paint roller is probably one of the most versatile paint tools out there. Investing in a high-quality roller is going to ultimately save you time and will allow for you not to have to replace your roller quite so often.
This paint roller is one of our favorites and is great for smoother finishes. However, if you are working with heavily textured walls or areas, make sure to grab yourself this roller.
3. 18-inch Roller
If you are painting a large area or a lot of different rooms, I would highly suggest getting yourself an extra-long paint roller. This bad boy is going to cut down on your paint time and you will be truly amazed at how much you will be able to accomplish in a short amount of time.
This option is a bit more of a splurge; however, totally worth it if you’re covering a lot of square footage.
Be certain that if you do decide to go with the 18 inch roller, that you also get yourself an adjustable roller frame to fit. This one is nice because you can adjust it to fit both your 12 inch and 18 inch rollers.
And lastly, you’re going to need an 18 inch paint tray as well. This one is a great budget option, and this one is a bit more of a splurge but is designed more like a bucket, making it super convenient to move from room to room.
4. Short-handled Trim Brush
This type of brush is my absolute favorite to use for any project that requires a brush, but especially for projects that have a lot of different angles.
When painting things like furniture, cabinets, or doors this brush is so useful. It’s amazing how much easier it is to navigate in righter areas without having the long handled attached.
5. Foam Foller
A foam roller is probably my most used painting product. You absolutely can’t skip this product when painting basically anything other than a wall.
A foam roller is going to give you amazingly smooth coverage and is perfect for painting furniture, cabinets, doors, or anything else with a smooth finish.
6. Paint Sprayer
Although a paint sprayer sometimes takes a bit of practice and getting the hang of, this can be a super helpful product to use for some of your bigger projects. We used a paint sprayer to paint all of the doors in our vacation rental… which was a lot. This saved us time a ton of time and gave us the best coverage and finish.
We used this budget option which worked fantastic. However, in the future we do plan to invest in this bad boy which has fantastic reviews as well.

7. Electric Roller
Now, this next item is not going to be one that is going to be for everyone or for every project. However, when my sister and I painted our entire Airbnb, we used this electric roller like crazy and found it extremely helpful.
When painting our Airbnb, we were working with extremely textured walls that we were painting white. To start, the walls were a medium brown color, so we needed something that was really going to pack a punch. And this electric roller did just that.
The one downfall of this tool is that it does get a bit heavy after a while… especially if you are painting ceilings with it (which we did). However, if you’re able to swap on and off with someone OR you just want a really great arm workout, this will be your best friend.
8. Frog tape
These next couple of items are more-so for your prep and not necessarily an item that you will do actual painting with. With that being said, Frog Tape is an absolute game changer for creating clean, crisp lines.
I think we’re all familiar with the traditional blue painter’s tape, but in my personal opinion, Frog Tape really blows the traditional painter’s tape out of the water.
9. Contractor paper
Lastly, one thing that is going to be your absolute best friend when doing large home painting projects (both interior and exterior) is contractor’s paper. This is going to save your floors from paint drips, spills, and overspray. And although it is going to take you some time to prep by getting this laid down in the beginning, I promise in the long run it will end up saving you time.
My sister and I regrettably did not use contractor’s paper during our Airbnb painting projects… and let me remind you, we painted EVERY. SINGLE. SQUARE. INCH. of that house. I can’t even begin to tell you how much time we spent moving drop cloths around and how much we wish we would have got ourselves some contractor’s paper to lay down at the start of our project.
Learn from our mistake and make sure to pick up a couple rolls of contractor’s paper before your next project.
Now that you have a list of the best painting tools for your next project, get those bad boys ordered so that you can get one step closer to the home of your dreams. Best of luck my friend, you’ve got this!
