This post covers the best paint for kitchen cabinets, how it will transform your kitchen, the minimal prep work involved, and how it holds up over time (spoiler alert – she’s durable).
We were convinced we had hit a gold mine when we first used this paint to update the kitchen cabinets in my our AirBNB Property. It goes on sooo smoothly and has the most beautiful finish. The end result truly looks like we hired a professional – although one might argue that my sister and I are most definitely professionals… or maybe just we would argue that.
Let’s see that transformation!
Before we jump into the details, let’s take a quick look at what we started with and where we ended up – we think you’ll agree that this is the glow up of the century for this cutie little kitchen.

The [minimal] prep work we would recommend:
One of the things that we love the most about this paint is that the prep work is so minimal compared to other paints we’ve used. The cabinets in our rental had a stain finish with some sheen to it so we did do a light sanding. Although sanding is the step of a painting project I dread the absolute most, if I’m being perfectly honest with myself sanding probably took us 15 minutes max. AND, since we’re all about transparency here… I’ve painted other pieces of furniture with this same paint and have skipped the sanding step (because yes, I’m lazy) and the end result has been just as good.
We didn’t do a primer prior to painting (another major bonus for the time-pressed lazy gal). Priming is generally a step that I have not been able to skip with other paints I’ve used for similar projects so the fact that you can get away with not doing the priming step for an entire kitchen is what sealed the deal for me.
Drumroll for the best paint for kitchen cabinets please…
The paint that we used and will swear by forever is Valspar Cabinet & Furniture Paint (linked here). We used Satin and I feel like this was the PERFECT finish. Not too glossy but not matte either, just perfectly in the middle. There is a semi-gloss option as well if you prefer that finish (found here). I’d like to know what kind of witchcraft is going on at Valspar because the way that this paint settles is incredible. If you’ve painted cabinets before you know that it’s nearly impossible to catch 100% of your drips but it literally does not matter with this paint because everything settles BEAUTIFULLY.
How does the paint hold up?
You might be asking yourself… is paint really going to hold up over time? We thought you might ask… so we checked in on our rental about six months after painting the cabinets and there was not one single chip. Not one. And we should probably add that this was with our property being fully booked for all six of those months. So to directly answer your question, yes, this paint holds up sooooo well over time!
In Conclusion…
I know it can be intimidating but I promise you can do and with the Valspar Cabinet & Furniture Paint as your sidekick you can’t go wrong. You got this my friend!
